In 2016, Little Big Town delivered a stunning cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” at the Grand Ole Opry.
Before starting the ballad that tells the story of all-consuming love, the group asked the audience to sing along. They then proceeded to perform the song without any music, harmonizing together in a way that rendered the audience silent.
As they sang, “Your beauty is beyond compare,” they captivated the crowd with every word. “With flaming locks of auburn hair, with ivory skin and eyes of emerald green.”
“Jolene” weaves a story of a woman who confronts a perfectly beautiful woman she believes is out to steal her love. The woman fears she cannot compete with Jolene’s stunning beauty and begs her throughout the song, “Please don’t take my man…please don’t take him just because you can.”
Parton released the song in late 1973, and it became her second solo No.1 single on the country charts. “Jolene” not only achieved massive success in the United States, but it also reached No.1 in Canada, No.8 in Ireland, and No.16 in Sweden.
